Perth on a Budget: How to Explore Western Australia's Capital for Less
Perth is Australia's sunniest capital city and its beaches — Cottesloe, Scarborough, City Beach, Trigg — are entirely free. The Indian Ocean beaches running north from Fremantle to Hillarys Boat Harbour are some of the finest urban beaches in the world, and every one of them is public, free, and accessible by train or bus from the city centre. The Transperth train and bus network connects Perth's major attractions on a smartrider card at fares well below taxi equivalents; the CAT (Central Area Transit) buses operate free in the inner city on four colour-coded routes covering the CBD, Northbridge, East Perth, and West Perth. Walking along the Swan River foreshore from the CBD to Fremantle via the foreshore path is a 19-kilometre free experience that showcases Perth's greatest asset: its relationship with water.
Free culture in Perth is exceptional. The Western Australian Museum in Northbridge is free for permanent collection access. The Art Gallery of Western Australia is free. The Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) in the Cultural Centre is free for most exhibitions. Kings Park and Botanic Garden — one of the world's great urban parks, at 400 hectares larger than New York's Central Park — is entirely free, with walking trails, Aboriginal heritage sites, and sweeping views over the city and river. The Leederville Farmers Market, the Freo Markets, and the weekend markets at Fremantle's Market Street are all free to enter and browse.
Budget eating in Perth starts with the Vietnamese and Asian restaurants of Northbridge, where bowls of pho, banh mi, and dumplings are available at prices comparable to any Asian city. The Fremantle fish and chip shops near the harbour serve fresh local catch from Western Australian waters at prices unchanged by the tourism premium of the surrounding area. The Subiaco Farmers Market and Stirling Farmers Market both operate on weekends with local produce at prices significantly below supermarket equivalents. Accommodation in Fremantle's hostel strip offers some of the best-value solo accommodation in Australia, with several well-reviewed properties in beautifully restored heritage buildings within walking distance of the markets, the beach, and the ferry to Rottnest.
