Perth 3-Day Itinerary: The Perfect Long Weekend in Western Australia
Perth is the world's most isolated major city — separated from Australia's eastern capitals by thousands of kilometres of desert — yet it rewards the journey with extraordinary beaches, a thriving food and wine culture, and a sense of space and light that no other Australian city replicates. Begin day one at the Western Australian Museum in Northbridge, which reopened in 2020 after a major redevelopment as one of the finest natural history and cultural history museums in Australia, with free permanent collection access. Walk through the Perth Cultural Centre to the Art Gallery of Western Australia, also free, then south through the CBD to Elizabeth Quay on the Swan River foreshore for the view across to South Perth's gardens and the Bell Tower — which houses the original bells of St Martin-in-the-Fields church, gifted by Britain to mark Australia's Bicentenary.
Day two belongs to the Margaret River region, 280 kilometres south — a long day trip but one that transforms the understanding of what Western Australia offers. The Margaret River wine region produces some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in Australia from a landscape of jarrah forest, limestone caves, and Indian Ocean coastline. Leeuwin Estate, Cullen Wines, and Vasse Felix are among the most celebrated producers; all offer cellar door tastings in settings of remarkable natural beauty. The coastline between Margaret River town and Augusta has some of the finest surf breaks in Australia at beaches where the only other visitors may be a handful of local surfers. The Boranup Karri Forest — a stand of towering karri trees, the world's third-tallest tree species — is free to drive and walk through.
On day three, cross the river to Fremantle — Perth's port city and one of the best-preserved Victorian-era streetscapes in Australia. The Fremantle Prison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; its historic gaol tours explore the history of Western Australia's penal colony from 1855 to 1991 in extraordinary atmospheric detail. The Fremantle Markets, operating Friday through Sunday, bring together artisan food producers, vintage dealers, and independent designers in a beautiful 1897 market hall. Walk along the cappuccino strip on South Terrace, then take the ferry from Victoria Quay to Rottnest Island — where quokkas, the world's happiest-looking marsupials, wander freely among the heritage cottages and white-sand bays of an island without cars, 19 kilometres offshore in the Indian Ocean.
