Perth primary and secondary schools began offering mindfulness and meditation classes this month through partnerships with local health providers.
Student wellbeing has drawn fresh attention after national reports on youth mental health showed increased anxiety cases in Western Australia over the past year. Schools seek practical tools that fit into daily timetables without requiring extra staff or large budgets.
Two initiatives stand out in the metro area. Nedlands Primary School runs a 15-minute guided meditation block each morning for years three to six, drawing on the adjacent Kings Park trails for occasional outdoor sessions. The City of Vincent schools network, which includes several sites along the Swan River, introduced the Mindful Learners program last term. It uses short breathing exercises before literacy lessons and has reached 420 students across four campuses.
Western Australia Country Health Service staff trained 28 teachers in these methods during a June workshop held at a Subiaco community centre. The training covered simple techniques that fit inside existing 45-minute periods.
A University of Western Australia review released in May tracked 1,150 students who took part in similar programs during 2025. Participants recorded an average 22 percent drop in self-reported stress scores after eight weeks. Sessions currently run at no direct cost to families because they are covered under existing school wellbeing grants.
Parents can check availability by contacting their child’s school office or visiting the WACHS website for the latest term timetable. Some after-school options also appear on the Kings Park parkrun noticeboard each Saturday for families wanting to try the practices together.
