Perth Local Sports Clubs Thrive by Building Stronger Community Ties

Perth's amateur football and rugby clubs have recorded a 28 per cent increase in registered players this season compared with 2025, driven by targeted community initiatives in suburbs such as Leederville and Scarborough.
The surge coincides with the ongoing World Cup in North America, yet the growth stems from local efforts to keep residents active rather than from international broadcasts alone. Clubs have extended training sessions and introduced low-cost family memberships to draw in residents who might otherwise watch from home.
Venues and programs driving participation
At Charles Veryard Reserve on Simpson Street, the Leederville Football Club runs weekly mixed-gender sessions that now attract 180 juniors, up from 110 last year. A few kilometres away, the Scarborough Sports Association operates out of the Scarborough Beach Sports Complex on West Coast Highway, where its Saturday morning touch rugby program has added two new age groups for adults over 35. Both organisations credit partnerships with the City of Stirling and City of Vincent for access to floodlit fields after 7 pm, allowing shift workers from nearby offices to join.
These clubs also host free barbecue evenings on the last Friday of each month, an initiative launched in March that has drawn an average of 240 attendees per event. The events rotate between the two grounds and include short coaching clinics led by former state-league players.
Numbers and next steps for residents
Registration data released by Football West on 10 July shows 4,872 players across Perth's northern and western suburbs, with fees capped at $165 for the full winter season. The same report notes that clubs offering at least one community event per fortnight retain 91 per cent of their members through to finals in September.
