The Grassroots Story Behind the Community Sport Movement
Perth clubs report steady rises in weekend registrations that trace back to neighbourhood fields rather than stadium spotlights.
How we reported this

Registrations for junior and adult community teams across Perth climbed 22 percent between January and June this year, according to figures compiled by the City of Perth recreation team.
The increase follows the national broadcast of the 2026 World Cup matches and arrives as families seek low-cost weekend activities near home rather than travel to paid facilities. Local coordinators say the trend reflects a return to the same parks and ovals that operated before pandemic restrictions altered routines.
Fields in Subiaco and Northbridge
Subiaco’s Mueller Park now hosts three additional Saturday morning soccer sessions run by the Subiaco Saints junior program, while Northbridge’s Robertson Park added a Tuesday evening touch-football competition organised by the Perth City Touch Association. Both sites sit within three kilometres of the central business district and charge $8 per session for adults and $5 for players under 16. Coaches report that new sign-ups include families who previously drove to larger commercial centres in Joondalup.
Equipment costs remain modest. A club-issued ball and bib set is included in the fee, and volunteers handle line marking each Friday evening using paint supplied by the City of Perth.
Numbers and next steps
City records show 4,180 active participants across 67 registered community teams in the first half of 2026, up from 3,430 at the same point last year. The largest growth occurred in mixed-gender netball at Forrest Oval in South Perth, which added 92 players after extending its season start date to 1 August.
Residents who want to join can register through the City of Perth website or at the next open day scheduled for 19 July at Robertson Park. Spaces are allocated on a first-come basis, with priority given to players living within the City of Perth boundary. Clubs advise arriving 30 minutes early with a Medicare card and a completed medical form available on the same site.
