Market operators in Perth have introduced online booking systems and entry fees starting at $6 per adult from July 1 this year.

The changes coincide with the cooler months when attendance at outdoor venues typically rises as locals seek fresh produce and sheltered stalls. City of Perth records show market visits increased 18 percent last winter compared with the prior year.

At the Fremantle Markets on South Terrace visitors must now reserve timed slots through the venue website to manage crowds. The Subiaco Sunday markets along Rokeby Road operate without bookings but charge $4 for parking in the adjacent council lot on weekends.

Transperth data released in May indicates a single adult fare on the Fremantle line costs $4.80 during peak hours while a day pass runs $9.60. Average spend per visitor at these sites reached $42 last winter according to a City of Perth survey of 1,200 shoppers.

Transport and entry details

Free shuttle buses run from Perth Station to the Fremantle Markets every 30 minutes on Saturdays between 8am and 2pm. Drivers heading to Subiaco should note the Rokeby Road parking limit of three hours with no re-entry allowed after payment.

Stalls at both locations accept cash and card with most vendors adding a 1.5 percent surcharge on electronic payments over $10.

Practical steps before you visit

Check the City of Perth website the night before for any weather-related closures and carry a reusable bag since single-use plastic bags carry a 15 cent levy at market entrances. Arrive before 9am to avoid peak queues at the paid parking machines.
