Free Haircuts Perth: Erdington Academy Student Support

Razwan Amin, who attended Erdington Academy until 2015, now runs Razortrim Studio and is providing free haircuts to students from low-income backgrounds at the school. The 27-year-old received a certificate last week from Carol Brown and Nicki Kansara of the Erdington Academy PTFA in recognition of his continued involvement.

The academy serves an area with elevated deprivation, where more than 50 per cent of students qualify for free school meals. Amin has arranged with the parent teacher association to accept direct referrals so eligible pupils can access the service without charge.

Support extends beyond one-off events

Initial discussions focused on a single raffle prize for prom, but Amin expanded the offer after reflecting on his own experience of growing up on free school meals. He noted that families often feel added strain during holidays when school meals are unavailable and activities become harder to afford.

Nicki Kansara, who chairs the PTFA and serves as a school governor, described the partnership as a direct response to the cost-of-living pressures affecting many households, not only those receiving pupil premium support. Her son Esa, a current student, has already used the service.

Alumnus role seen as motivational

Kansara highlighted the potential for Amin to demonstrate to current pupils that leaving the academy can lead to running a successful local business. Esa has spoken about the confidence boost that comes from a fresh haircut and the sense that similar success is achievable for others from the same school.

The arrangement continues on an ongoing basis through PTFA referrals, with Amin stating that every eligible child from a low-income family is welcome at the studio. The certificate presentation marks the formal recognition of this sustained contribution to the academy community.
